Relevancy is buss word right now. You can find seminars focusing on the topic, statistics decrying a lack of relevancy, books which offer the secrets to relevancy. Although talk of relevancy is trendy, the concept itself is absolutely critical.
Relevancy(adj) concerning the case in question; pertinent; applicable.
Relevancy is a daily endeavor. If you doubt me try talking sports with a bunch of junior high boys without having up-to-date information. Try conversing with people about current events without having a grasp on what is going on in the world around you. The conversation will quickly fizzle out.
Unfortunately, the same thing can happen in the church. Maybe you’ve experienced comments like, “I would go to church if they would actually talk about something I cared about!” or “Church just doesn’t seem relevant to me or my situation.”
The Apostle Paul while in Athens gives us a model for pushing back against this attack. (Acts 17:23a) For as I walked around and looked carefully at your objects of worship, I even found an altar with this inscription: TO AN UNKNOWN GOD…He started where they were and used it as a starting point to pull them ultimately to the God that he could name. We’ve got to start where people are and with the questions they have.
Christ is relevant to every area of our life!
